What is new in Microsoft Office 2007

MS Office 2007 introduced several new key changes that made Office tools easier to use. Here is a look at changes introduced.

  • Microsoft Office Button – Office Button replaces File menu in previous Office versions. You can save, open new file, set options etc using Button.

  • Ribbon is the panel at the top and contains all the tabs (such as Home, Insert etc). Tab is then divided into Groups. Group is a collection of features (For example Insert tab has Pages, Links, Texts etc). Commonly used functions are displayed in group. Click the arrow button at the bottom right corner to expand the hidden functions in the group.

  • Quick Access Toolbar – Quick Access Toolbar is a Toolbar at the top, next to Office Button (You can change it to show below Ribbon, though). This is a collections of commands, you frequently need. You can customize the toolbar and add more options.

  • Mini Toolbar – Mini toolbar is a collection of common formatting commands. Mini toolbar is displayed when you right click on text or cell.

  • New file format – With Office 2007, Microsoft introduced new file formats such as docx, xlsx etc. Old doc, xls files are displayed and can be worked upon.

Saving Office 2007 file in old format

Microsoft introduced new format with Office 2007. Word 2007 saves file as .docx. Excel 2007 saves file as .xlsx and so on. But most of the world is still using old versions of Office. These people might have trouble accessing your files. So, for the time being it might still make sense to save files in old doc or xls format.

Saving Excel 2007 files in XLS format

Click Office button and click Excel Options at the bottom right corner. Go to save option and change the default save option to Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls). Now on files will be saved in old format by default.

Saving Word 2007 files in DOC format

Click Office button and click Word Options at the bottom right corner. Go to save option and change the default save option to Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc). Now on files will be saved in old format by default.
